Class 1

Thurs 31 Jan/Sat Feb 9
Theory

Discussion - Why do we dance? What does dancing give us and what challenges do we face when dancing? How does dance make you feel and what role does it play in your life? Is there a traditional dance in your family? When do you perform this traditional dance? In what way has dance changed you? Or has the way you experienced dance changed over time? Whether you are new to dance or have had dance as part of your life from the year dot, there are ways dance affects us that helps us to find connection to ourselves and to each other. It is a language without words and one we seem to understand on a purely physical level. During this course we will be looking at the language of dance and what it is capable of expressing. It is good to know what dance means to you as we embark on this discovery tour of dance. Its both a historical tour as we look at choreographers past and a tour of the present as you uncover what you want to communicate through dance.

If you missed this discussion, be great to make some notes in your choreographers journal about what dance means to you. You can start with sentences like; "I dance because..." "Dance makes me feel..." " Dance has changed me by..." "I find dancing hard when..." You can also think of your own questions or just write a paragraph about it.

Overview of terminology:
  • Expressive Intention
  • Body Actions
  • Physical Skills

Unit 3's need to revise the above and..
  • Cultural Influences
  • Elements of movement.

Go to Page 39 of the Glossary in the VCE Danrce study design to find the meanings. Write them in your VCE Dance folder under the heading of Outcome 1 (link to Study Design below).

Practical Class

Pilates warm up focussing on gaining connection with deep abdominals (transverse abdominus), pelvic floor and gluteals to stabilise the pelvis while strengthening and stretching abdominals, obliques, lumbar spine, triceps, trapezius, adductors and quadriceps.

Task 1: Name Phrase
Write down as many body parts as you can think of.
Tear up the names and put in a hat (or in the middle of the floor)

For each letter of your name you need to select a corresponding body part.
Once you have a body part for each letter you need to create a phrase that uses the body part selected to create the shape of each letter. ie) the elbow draws a C shape that brings the body to a high plane finishing low.

When you have finished each letter with a specific movement generated by the selected body part, you should have approx 3-6 movments (depending on how many letters in your name) to spell it out in movement. Now make each movement flow together, you now have a phrase.

Using Body Actions (GLEFTS), you will begin to develop this phrase.
  • Choose one movement and make it locomote at minimum 2 meters. You may repeat to locomote or extend the movement.
  • Choose one movement and elevate it. (jumps or elevating body parts)
  • Choose one movement and make it fall.
  • Add a stillness
  • Make one movement turn.

Teach your phrase to a small group (2-3)
As a group work out how you might use these 3 phrases to choreograph a short piece with a beginning, development and resolution.
Use cannon, unison and contrast to vary the material.

Perform for the class. Discussion of each piece and what was valuable about the exercise.

Task 2: Favorites
Choose your favorite music track and choreograph a phrase that illustrates your favorite or most comfortable way to dance.

This will continue on for next class. So for those that missed class 1. Have some music to bring and start to think about 5-8 steps that you can make flow together to make a phrase that goes with the music.
